It really depends on what game you will want to play. You will have a much bigger selection for the 360.
If you want good games get a 360 it outguns the PS3 when it comes to games but I'll warn you the online can be quite frustrating because people are REALLY and I mean REALLY good at the games sometimes and you have to sometimes play against them, but overall its good and most games if you don't want competitive online have a casual social mode you can play on as well also most pair you up with people of a simmilar skill level. The games are good and disregard anything you hear about bugs or the red ring of death because the latest models have corrected those problems. Ps3, the controller is a lot simpler, you don't have to pay for online (although you do get lag), and the graphics are better.

Honestly, the Wii is better for new gamers compared to these two. The design of the Wii allows everyone old and new to play. There are many great games for the Wii like Wii Fit, Wii Play, Wii Fit, Boom Blox, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and lots of Mario games that can help ween new gamers until the point where they are pros. It comes with Wii Sports, a fairly simple games with tennis, boxing, baseball, golfing, and bolwing. My mom who never really played games had a blast bowling on the Wii for the first time and the Wii is being used in retirement homes and health centers all over America to keep senior citizens active.
i would go with "the 360". the 360 has lots of games and lots are only for the 360. so the ps3 has blue-ray but u can get stofe buy plays game u can earn gamer points that u can spend on xbox live by only playing games but u need to buy or rent a game so u can play the game and get points. you have to do certaint things to get the points. pluse a 360 cost less than a ps3,. pse cost over $450 u can get a elite one for $400 and it comes with 2 games(if u get the right one) and it has a tons of data storage so u can but tons of games.
