On the Xbox 360 what is the point of Gamer Points?

I Noticed that whenever i log on to my xbox account there is a row of the games ive recently played along with the Letter G and a number like 770. What is this for?On the Xbox 360 what is the point of Gamer Points?That my friend is for your achievements. Everytime you get an achievement you earn gamerscore. Its basically to show how good you've done in a game or how far you have played, to show off to your friends is what its for. Like me, i have over 7000 gamerscore. But thats because i play alot, its bothing fancy and wont get you anything.
