no ,the points you have 1000 of are called gamerscore. you get gamerscore from acheivments in games and they have no use whatsoever exept to boast. To but a movie, game, or anything else from the marketplace you need to go to gamestop or blockbuster and buy microsoft points, depending on where you live they cost about $20 for 1500 points.
The thousand that you have are part of your gamer score,they're the points you earn for getting achievements and playing games,in order to buy stuff on xbox live you need to buy points,it's kinda dumb but yeah you need to buy points to buy stuff the points you're given when you play games are mostly for like bragging rights and stuff. You can buy points by going to xbox live marketplace and adding points to your account,then you can buy games,movies,add ons,or whatever you'd like.
