When you get xbox live, do you have to start a new gamer profile?

if you do , do you lose all of your achievements and gamerpoints?When you get xbox live, do you have to start a new gamer profile?umm well if theres already a gamer profile thats made you can use that one, but if there isnt make a new one. er you can just make a new one anyways you dont have to use the one that is already premade(if there is one).
