Do you get gamer points and achievements in playstation 3?

Im new to ps3 and im buying one so i was just wondering if you unlocked achievements and recieved gamer points like you do in xbox 360?Do you get gamer points and achievements in playstation 3?there called trophies. they dont show up as just a total # they'll say you have like 100 bronze 50 silver 15 gold and 3 platinum. then there is the total and your level #. You don't get gamer points or achievements. You gets trophies. There are bronze, silver, gold and platinum trophies. Each carry a different value and you level up your gamer level based on that. Obviously bronze trophies are worth the least and platinum and the most. Most platinum trophies are awarded for getting all the other trophies in the game. So its kinda like xbox achievements and gamerscore just simplified into trophies.
